This initiative uses prescribed fire to reduce wildfire risks and protect the Western Joshua Tree in the Mojave Desert, ensuring its survival while promoting community involvement in conservation.
Grazing Cattle to Reduce Fire Hazards - Controlling Non Native Species
The spread of dry, flammable grasses crowds out native species and increases wildfire risk in areas with strong winds. To tackle this, we introduced 16 cows to graze the landscape.
Monarch Butterfly Migration Mapping & Waystation Open House
We hosted a fun, educational Monarch Migration event. Families learned about monarchs, native milkweed, & habitat protection. Attendees enjoyed displays, planting demos, & community science projects that support monarch conservation.
Moth Night at the Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve
On July 19, 2025, we hosted our first Moth Night at Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve, in partnership with the San Gabriel Mountains CNPS chapter. Attendees of all ages enjoyed an evening of lightsheeting, photography, and learning about nocturnal insects.
